Connecticut School Wellness Policy Reports

September, 2008

During the 2007-08 school year, the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) conducted a review of the content of district school wellness policies using a school wellness policy assessment tool developed in partnership with the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University.

The resulting School Wellness Policy Report was mailed to superintendents, board of education chairpersons and school food service directors in June 2008. District reports include the following three documents:

bulletSchool Wellness Policy Report an overall summary of the districts scores, state averages and District Reference Group (DRG) scores for each of the seven school wellness policy categories;
bulletSchool Wellness Policy Rating Sheet the actual district coding for the 96 policy items which determine the scores for each policy category; and
bulletSchool Wellness Policy Report Comments Section (if applicable) a review of the districts policy language for consistency with all applicable federal and state requirements, including suggestions for revising language that is noncompliant with federal or state regulations or statutes.

An overview of the School Wellness Policy Report can be found at http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/lib/sde/PDF/DEPS/Student/NutritionEd/SWP/Overview_SWP_report.pdf.

The School Wellness Policy Report for each Connecticut school district participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's child nutrition programs is available at http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/cwp/view.asp?a=2626&q=322168. Each online report includes the one-page summary (School Wellness Policy Report) followed by the districts scores for each policy item (School Wellness Policy Rating Sheet). The Coding Tool for Connecticut School Wellness Policies provides detailed information on how the scores were obtained and includes samples of statements for each rating (http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/lib/sde/PDF/DEPS/Student/NutritionEd/SWP/SW_CodingTool.pdf).

CSDE and the Rudd Center recently developed eight handouts summarizing the statewide results of the School Wellness Policy Report for each of the seven policy categories. They include data on the percent of districts with strong, weak and no statements for each policy item and provide average state scores. They also address the impact of District Reference Group and healthy food certification on district scores. The Data Summary handouts are available online at http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/cwp/view.asp?a=2626&q=322168 and include the following:

1. Overview
2. Nutrition Education
3. School Meals
4. Other School Food and Beverages
5. Physical Education
6. Physical Activity
7. Communication and Promotion
8. Evaluation
